Why haven’t my breasts developed?

Q: I’m 18 and my nipples haven’t popped out yet. My period started when I was 13. I’m 5′10 and slender, but would my weight have anything to do with it? Shouldn’t my breasts be fully developed by now?A: From your question, it sounds as if you have concerns about your breast development. In females, one of the first signs of puberty is breast development, also known as thelarche. Breast “buds” are seen typically two years before the onset of menstrual periods, also called menarche. Over the next years of puberty, breasts continue to develop as the rest of your body changes, including your height and hair in your genital region. Since you stated your menstrual cycles started several years ago, it sounds as if you have been undergoing puberty. We’re not sure from your description how much breast development you actually have. On occasion, some young women have normal breast development with so-called “inverted” nipples that do not point outward, but rather are retracted into the breast. Inverted nipples can be completely normal. Some women also have smaller breasts than others with less prominent breast tissue. This can also be normal. Very rarely breast tissue does not develop, and this condition does need to be evaluated by your doctor. In order to receive a more complete assessment, we suggest that you make an appointment with your physician. This way, someone can exam you and answer your questions about puberty or breast development in a complete and thorough manner.
