Daly Communications is proud to celebrate its fifth year in business by donating its services to Prevention Network. Prevention Network is a not-for-profit agency that has been educating, training, and providing prevention services and education pertaining to substance use, abuse, and addictions to the Central New York community since 1949. Daly Communications plans to donate a complete website redesign of Prevention Network’s current site as well as site optimization to help them become more visible on the web among the local community and help increase donations for the cause.

Daly Communications was established in September of 2003 by Dave Daly as a technical writing firm. The company has expanded its service offering over the past five years to include web development and design, IT services, and marketing communications and has experienced substantial growth each year since its inception. “The majority of our customers are Central New York businesses and we wanted to give back to the community,” says Dave Daly, President of Daly Communications Group. “Prevention Network has done a great deal of good for CNY and donating our services to help them is the perfect way to celebrate our 5th year milestone.”

“What a wonderful gift this is to the agency and benefit to CNY,” says Brad Finn, Executive Director of Prevention Network. Work on the new site will begin in the next few weeks and should be unveiled by 2009. Sun Releases New Glassfish Preview

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Sun Microsystems has announced the preview version of the next major release of its GlassFish application server, which, among other things, provides a preview of Java Platform Enterprise Edition 6.

“The goal after version 2 was to, with version 3, build a modular architecture,” Hinz said. “We wanted to build an application container so you could do everything from the Web tier to mission critical” applications, he said. Hinz said the v3 prelude could be used in production.

Sun’s GlassFish open-source application server has more than 14 million downloads since its first release in May 2005, more than 225,000 registrations in 2008 and hundreds of production deployments around the globe , Sun officials said. And Hinz said features such as ease of installation and management, modularity and extensibility and enhanced JRuby support enable GlassFish Enterprise Server v3 Prelude empower developers to easily scale their projects from small Web-tier deployments to large-scale mission critical architectures.

“GlassFish is doing surprisingly well. It’s picking up some solid reviews from ISVs, and Sun continues to invest in performance and usability,” said James Governor, an analyst with RedMonk LLC. “Downloads are certainly nicely on the up tick,” he added. “For me it’s also a big deal that GlassFish v3 prelude is now clearly on the OSGi train, which improves system modularity and standards-support.”

Ari Zilka, chief technology officer at Terracotta, said, “While we have always had respect for GlassFish and they have worked with us since the day we open sourced, every release, we are doing more and more with GlassFish. Why is this? Users are telling us that GlassFish is especially easy to manage. It is winning bake-offs, especially against very expensive offerings from Oracle and IBM. One customer in online gaming said that GlassFish is superior to WebLogic, promptly demanded production support for Terracotta underneath GlassFish 2 and now 3, all the way into production. They have not looked back.”

Ajax Gurus Head New Mozilla Developer Tools Lab

Friday, November 7th, 2008

For AJAX users in the know, Ajaxian.com is near the top of the list of helpful sites on the cutting edge. Perhaps that’s why the Mozilla Foundation has recruited Ajaxian co-founders Dion Almaer and Ben Galbraith to spearhead the next generation of Mozilla Web development tools.

In a recent statement to SD Times, Almaer and Galbraith outlined possible areas of focus for the new Mozilla developer tools lab. Many of them center on propagating and fostering support for open Web standards.

The pair began by describing the current woes of Web developers: “Because the open Web platform consists of a diverse ecosystem of browsers from different companies and organizations, developers are quite often forced to correlate a variety of inconsistent documentation from many sources in order to answer basic questions.

Another problem, according to Almaer and Galbraith, is the relatively steep learning curve associated with open Web standards. “The core strength of the open Web is its very openness, the ability of developers worldwide to jump in and contribute,” they wrote. “Yet we feel the barriers to participation are often significant. Each open-source project works differently, and it’s often not clear how newcomers can contribute code that is eventually accepted.”

Despite the pair’s confidence that new tools can address those problems, when and how such tools will surface remain to be seen. “While at this stage we haven’t narrowed our focus to any specific solutions to these problems, these are the issues that most loom on our radar,” wrote Almaer and Galbraith. “We’re anxious to talk to Web developers to get more of their perspective too.

“The browsers are picking up a lot of momentum and adding a lot of new functionality to the Web these days. Now it is time for the tools to catch up.”
