This latest release of VMS includes a number of new integrated connectors to popular Internet applications services, which developers can use to build new “mash-up” mobile applications. GM Delays Development Spending

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Cash-poor General Motors Corp. is postponing nearly all spending on product development in 2009 and 2010, reports Automotive News on its Web site today. The automaker also is cutting spending on engineering, design, and research and development.

Two high profile vehicles the Chevrolet Camaro and the Chevrolet Volt plug in hybrid are protected from the cutbacks, according to the report. Likewise, the restyled Buick LaCrosse and possibly the Cadillac CTS wagon are still due to market as planned.

GM tentatively will push back the launch of the Chevrolet Cruze, which was supposed to debut in the 2011 model year. That launch will be delayed six months to a year, say sources familiar with GM’s plans.

GM spokesman Dee Allen characterized the report as speculation when contacted by the Free Press.

“What we have said, and we have said it all along, is that we have an ongoing effort to realign our resources,” Allen said, adding that GM regularly conducts reviews of its product portfolio.

The Free Press reported last Thursday that GM is likely to announce additional cost cuts when it reports its third-quarter financial results, and that every facet of the organization is under scrutiny for possible cuts. One source told the Free Press that the cuts are expected to include such moves as the cancellation or delay of some vehicle programs, which could bring reductions in engineering and design staff.

Browsermedia Launches Website For Umd Women’s Basketball Program

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

The University of Maryland approached BrowserMedia with a big goal: to have the most innovative website in the NCAA that showcases their program in a unique way without compromising it’s content. The resulting website breaks the mold of traditional athletic team sites. It addition to successfully conveying the unique approach that Coach Frese brings to the team, the Maryland Women’s Basketball program hopes this new website will attract new recruits, gain national attention, and increase ticket sales.

Coach Brenda Frese said of BrowserMedia, “We are very thankful and fortunate to have had such a great team to execute on such an exciting project with us. BrowserMedia was able to take our ideas and vision, transforming our brand into an interactive and impactful presence on the web. We look forward to continuing to work with BrowserMedia as they continue to help us evolve and further develop the future phases we have planned for the site.”

The new website features interactive Flash video, dynamic player profiles, a virtual tour of the Comcast Center, personalized messages for the fans, and other interactive media and content. Recognizing that the target audience for the site includes younger, Internet-savvy users, the site is loaded with videos and offers integrated sharing links with Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.

Dave Whelan, BrowserMedia’s Creative Director, said, “The key directive from the client was that this site really needed to set them apart from their peers, so we didn’t want to look to the typical team sports sites for inspiration - whether collegiate or professional. So Jay Ferguson, our lead designer on this project, came up with a polished design that fits comfortably alongside top athletic apparel brands, integrating a new twist on the cover flow interface in the process. We feel the final product is something that accurately reflects UMD’s high level of professionalism and play.”

Front Seat is a two-year-old software company created to exploit the power of technology to positively impact civic life.  Front Seat is a rare opportunity to work with a world-class software team where social benefit is the top priority.  We’re looking for a seasoned backend engineer to compliment our UI expertise and help us dream up the next wave of civic innovation driven by software.

Our flagship project is Walk Score, a site that promotes walkable neighborhoods by providing a walkability score for any address.  Walk Score created a tsunami of media coverage and users have scored over 5 million addresses on the site. Other projects include CountMore.org, a site that helps students decide whether to vote in their school state or home state, Kathy’s Climate Kit, a global warming gift box that we’ve spun off as a separate consumer products company, The Predatory Lending Assocation, an experimental political satire lampooning payday lenders, and Better Bills, which promotes energy conservation through better bill design.
