Local Web Developer Launches Waterfront Plan Forum

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

In the interest of starting an open discussion on the city‘s controversial waterfront development project, a Thunder Bay resident has launched a website featuring chat forums, polls, and an area to post photos and links to videos.

Money raised will also be used for the group‘s miscellaneous expenses like advertising and printing costs.

While Smith would not say how much FOMP has raised to date, he did say the campaign will likely be lengthy since the OMB hearings could go into the spring.

However, he is optimistic the group will accomplish its goals. “People are really worked up (about the waterfront development project) and they want a say in this because its so divisive and so important to the community,” he said. “They want their voice to be heard on this.”

Microsoft Adopts Open Source jQuery JavaScript Library

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

In big news for its developer division and a huge nod to its burgeoning support for open source software, Microsoft has announced its plans to support the jQuery open source JavaScript library.

The move to support jQuery comes less than a month before the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC), which will be held next month in Los Angeles and bodes well in terms of what kind of news we might be able to expect at the PDC.

jQuery is a lightweight open source JavaScript library that in a relatively short span of time has become one of the most popular libraries on the web, said Scott Guthrie, Microsoft corporate vice president, in a blog announcing Microsoft’s support of jQuery. John Resig, the creator of jQuery, who also is a chief evangelist at Mozilla, said Microsoft joins a long list of jQuery users, including Google, Intel, IBM, Intuit, Reuters, and many others.
