jQuery Adopted By Microsoft And Nokia

Monday, September 29th, 2008

That big software company in Redmond will include JavaScript framework jQuery in its development environment. At the same time, Nokia announced that it will use jQuery for its mobile browser development. That’s two more big companies to join Google, Amazon, and thousands of other sites using jQuery.

Microsoft has long struggled to keep up with advances in JavaScript. In July the company announced an Ajax roadmap, which looked like Microsoft was going to eventually re-create all the features already in popular frameworks. Instead, Microsoft is going to incorporate someone else’s code, and it’s open source code at that.

This is a great move by Microsoft to avoid creating its own jQuery like framework. The company that seems to always require others to change is adapting to the way things already are on the web. It couldn’t have made a better choice in jQuery, which is a fast, nimble framework, two adjectives not often used to describe anything related to MS web development.

Local Web Developer Launches Waterfront Plan Forum

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

In the interest of starting an open discussion on the city‘s controversial waterfront development project, a Thunder Bay resident has launched a website featuring chat forums, polls, and an area to post photos and links to videos.

Money raised will also be used for the group‘s miscellaneous expenses like advertising and printing costs.

While Smith would not say how much FOMP has raised to date, he did say the campaign will likely be lengthy since the OMB hearings could go into the spring.

However, he is optimistic the group will accomplish its goals. “People are really worked up (about the waterfront development project) and they want a say in this because its so divisive and so important to the community,” he said. “They want their voice to be heard on this.”

Microsoft Adopts Open Source jQuery JavaScript Library

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

In big news for its developer division and a huge nod to its burgeoning support for open source software, Microsoft has announced its plans to support the jQuery open source JavaScript library.

The move to support jQuery comes less than a month before the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC), which will be held next month in Los Angeles and bodes well in terms of what kind of news we might be able to expect at the PDC.

jQuery is a lightweight open source JavaScript library that in a relatively short span of time has become one of the most popular libraries on the web, said Scott Guthrie, Microsoft corporate vice president, in a blog announcing Microsoft’s support of jQuery. John Resig, the creator of jQuery, who also is a chief evangelist at Mozilla, said Microsoft joins a long list of jQuery users, including Google, Intel, IBM, Intuit, Reuters, and many others.

Direct hit on Galveston, media riding it out

Monday, September 15th, 2008

As many as 25,000 people remain in Galveston as Hurricane Ike makes a direct hit on the island. Among them are several media crews : many residents on Galveston are now calling for help, but nobody can respond. And there are hundreds of thousands of others in mandatory evacuation areas who refused to pack up and leave. I’m afraid the Weather Service and its “face certain death” warning may be right — this is shaping up to be a major loss of life.

Update: The storm surge was than expected. Whew.
